A Brief Introduction of the Continuing Education Center of Northeast Agricultural University

The Northeast Agricultural University, first called Northeast Agricultural College, which was established in Harbin and has been key university of Heilongjiang Province and national “211 Project " university, a governmental program aimed at turning about 100 Chinese universities into exceptionally high quality academic institutions in the new century. NEAU has the following 7 disciplines: Agriculture, Science, Engineering, Economics, Management, Arts and Laws. There are 19 faculties, 2 teaching departments, 3 national key disciplines, 2 key disciplines of Agriculture Department, 18 Provincial level key disciplines, and 6 post-doctoral programs covering 26 doctoral directions, 44 master degrees, 4major master programs, 51 undergraduate programs. The Biology faculty sets up a talents training base for national basic scientific research and teaching. The total staff number is 959, including 178 professors and 299 associate professors. Among them, there is one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Science and is the specially-appointed professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, and 101 doctoral degree Supervisors. The campus covers an area of 275 hectares with total construction area of 536,000 square meters.

The Continuing Education Center of Northeast Agricultural University is composed of Network Educational College and Adult Educational College.
The Adult Higher Education of Northeast Agricultural University founded in 1957 and the Adult Educational College was later established in 1995, which played very important roles as not only Self-educated Examination Office of three specialties involving Agricultural Economics and Management, Crops and Agriculture Extension, but also the training bases for the civil servants of Heilongjiang Province and technicians. It sets up such many kinds of educational forms as bachelor degree started from senior high school, bachelor degree started from college for professional training, short-cycle courses from senior high school as well as much other training. The faculties comprise six departments of Agriculture, Science and Engineering, Economics, Management and Law. For the development of more than 40 years, our college has cultivated over 15,000 qualified adult graduates. Keeping the teaching idea of “struggling for existence with products quality, developing for markets with enterprise reputation” in mind, our school has been highly praised by both the society and employers. It was therefore awarded as “Excellent College for Correspondence Teaching Education of Ordinary Higher Learning School”.
On July 2002, with the authorization of the China Ministry of Education, the Northeast Agricultural University became a trial spot of distance education and established the Network Educational College, which built 30 teaching centers inside and outside all over the country and jointed together with the Aopeng Distance Educational Center and the All China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives to create a kind of operation system of distance education which is spreading everywhere in China. The College has three teaching levels with 29 majors. Since 2002, much more attention has been paid to development of the continuing education. In order to strengthen training of the talents from villages, it has built a few training base for them and conducted the education for the rural cadres at different levels. Distance education is an important supplement to the full-time teaching and a vital means for school to serve best to the “three dimensional rural questions”, thus extending vast influence of the higher education.

Early in 2003, the Network Educational College and Adult Educational College incorporated into the Continuing Education Center, which aims at constructing the systems of continuing education of agricultural science and technology and education for life with the state-of- art teaching methods combining education with modern information and technology. The Continuing Education Center of Northeast Agricultural University will speed up development of the continuing education, enabling it to march abreast with degree education, and will widen the field and channel for teaching to nurture more excellent specialists for the society.
